Self/Other is a collaboration between anthropologist and writer Simon Newitt, ethnographic photographer Curtis James, and graphic designer Emily Macaulay.
Our work together sets out to reveal something of the character of contemporary life in the UK by sharing the stories of people at crucial fracture points in our social arrangements.
Using a visual and participatory form of ethnographic enquiry, our goal is to notice the extraordinary buried in the everyday, and to surface those cultural assumptions and social structures often hidden in plain sight.
Along the way we want to work with individuals, communities and socially purposed organisations to develop their own lines and forms of enquiry. And we want to collaborate developmentally on this, leaving each with a new and enhanced capability for learning.
