The Privatisation of Meaning
On November 13th 2019 we are hosting a unique participatory and multi-media event in Brighton as part of Meaning Conference 2019 Fringe.
Over three hours we’re going to explore together some of the deepest assumptions and structures our society is organised around and the ways these shape dominant norms and values about what our society and culture(s) consider to be a good and meaningful life. Using sociology, history, film, media and reportage we will examine the ideology expressed by these assumptions and the ways in which various techniques and technologies of state, cultural and corporate power work to privatise meaning as an exercise in social control and conformity.
This won’t be a workshop like any you have experienced before because we’re not just going to discuss this stuff, we’re also going to work together to make a short zine that speaks to the ideas, discussion, creativity and learning we generate. At the end of the night everyone will leave with a hard copy and, we hope, some new thinking and friends!
We’ll be at ONCA gallery in Brighton between 6pm and 9pm (with drinks afterwards) and we’re looking for ten people to join us.
The event is totally free and you don’t need anything other than a healthy curiosity and the willingness to be nudged out of your comfort zone and participate. So if you want to be part of this unique event just drop us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) with a few lines about yourself (this can be anything you like so long as it gives us a sense of you) and why you want to be involved.
Places are strictly limited to ten and it’s not first-come-first serve. Just make sure you get in touch before Friday 18th October at 5pm!
